New Chitose Airport

Domestics and International airports

New Chitose Airport is the largest airport in Hokkaido that serves as an air gateway of this prefecture. Although indicated as "Sapporo"by airlines, the actual destination where airplanes land is this airport. The route connecting it with Tokyo International Airport (Haneda Airport) is used by many passengers and the number is one of the highest even on a worldwide level. Even counting just the two major airline companies, one to two flights leave this airport every hour. A railroad station is located beneath the airport building. Going to Sapporo, the central city of Hokkaido, is only about a 40-minute train ride (express train) and three to four express trains run every hour. Because there are a variety of souvenir stores and restaurants in the airport building, you can get many of the popular Hokkaido specialties here. In summertime, the sight of airplanes arriving and departing can be enjoyed up close from the roof of the building.
