This fall only the ‘JR East Pass Special’ returns at the low price of 10,000 yen!

Last year’s popular ‘JR East Pass Special’ will be available again this fall as part of the Destination Niigata promotion (October – December). This special pass offers unlimited rail travel on any three days within a one-month period and can be used between 1 September and 31 December 2009.

The pass will remain at the amazingly low price of 10,000 yen (adult) or 5,000 yen (child age 6-11). Although the focus this year is Niigata, the pass in fact covers all of JR East territory including greater Tokyo, the Narita Airport rail service, all long-distance Shinkansen ‘bullet trains’ and Limited Express trains in northeastern Honshu and numerous local lines throughout this region. The area covered by the pass includes the entire northeast Tohoku region also covers central areas such as Nagano, Niigata and even access to the Izu Peninsula southwest from Tokyo.

This special pass is half the cost of the standard JR East 5 consecutive-day and 4 flexible-day passes which are 20,000 yen each. It’s reduced rate means that even if you travel to spots fairly close to Tokyo such as Nasu-Shiobara, Jomo-Kogen, Minakami, Karuizawa, Kobuchisawa, Takahagi or Izu-Atagawa, you will still save money. We are hoping that many visitors will take advantage of this pass to enjoy the fall foliage and the many other charms of East Japan.

* Please note carefully that the JR East Pass Special will be on sale overseas from 1 September through 20 November, and that the exchange voucher purchased overseas must be exchanged in Japan between 1 September and 1 December 2009. Within Japan the pass will be on sale from 1 September until 1 December 2009.
