Cherry Blossom Viewing
It's spring time, the much awaited season where most people look forward to and hoping the bitter cold winter would end soon. The sight of Sakura, or Cherry Blossoms, would send a sense of relief knowing that the long winter is now over.
Cherry blossom season typically takes place around mid-March to end-March. Everyone would go out for a hanami (cherry blossom viewing) walk or pinic. It is said that the tradition started in the Nara Period (710-794) as an event for nobles who wanted to copy the Chinese tradition of plum viewing. Ever since, Japanese people have been celebrating the arrival of spring by appreciating the cherry blossoms with family and friends.
One aspect of life in Japan that shows how important hanami is for Japanese people is that specific dates when cherry blossom will bloom throughout Japan, often dubbed sakura zensen(cherry blossom front), had been calculated by the Japan Meteorological Agency. Although the government agency stopped this service, private weather forecast organisations continue to calculate the date independently.
